風景写真あるいは写真作品が作家の個的な経験や感性に依拠せざるを得ないと考えるなら、海は自身の原風景であり、写真家として自立する以前の視覚の原体験であるといえます。
地球は太陽の引力によって循環し、月は地球の引力で循環し、水は地球の引力で落下し、太陽の熱で蒸発し雨となって循環します。また、日本の仏教には「輪廻転生」という言葉があり、人の生命さえも循環し再生すると考えられています。
写真家としてそういった地球の循環に身を置くこと、そしてそれをダイレクトに感じさせるイメージを生成することがライフワークとなり、ずっと引力や地球や宇宙の循環などをテーマとして撮影してきました。
前作、「High Tide Wane Moon」は月の満ち欠けと月の引力によって作用する潮の満ち引きの写真です。
「Round trip / water circulation」は、水の往還、循環の始まりである海と終着である河口とを撮影したものです。
「Round trip / sea line」は自らの原風景を採取するように海岸線を巡っています。
「Round trip / sun moon and sky」は、太陽、月そして空を地球の動きをダイレクトに暗示させる「アイコン」として描いています。
「Plants , Flowers, Glasses」については、水と光との光合成によって成長し酸素を供給し続ける植物、生命誕生の始まりも植物であり、地球は生命の星となったのは植物から供給される酸素よっている、そんな生命全体の「アイコン」です。
それぞれの作品は、それぞれ別のシリーズですが、写真家としての自分の中では一繋がりになったものなのです。
If it is true that photographers rely on their personal experiences and sensibilities when creating their landscapes and other photographic works, then for me the sea is the basis of my own earliest memories and informing my sensibilities before I became a photographer.
The Sun’s gravity makes the Earth revolve around it; the Earth’s gravity makes the Moon revolve around it. The Earth’s gravity makes water fall; the Sun’s heat evaporates the water and completes the cycle by becoming rain. In Japanese Buddhism, the concept of rinnetensho holds that the human soul is also in a cycle of reincarnation.
As a photographer I place myself amid these cycles that occur here on Earth; my life’s work is to create images that allow one to directly sense these patterns. For a long time now I have been photographing the endless cycles of gravity, the Earth, and space.
“Round trip / Coastline and water circulation” is a journey along coastlines collecting images reminiscent of my childhood memories. And it is a series on the sea—the beginning and the route of the water cycle, and the end of the water cycle.
“Sun moon and sky” shows the Sun, Moon, and the sky as “icons” that implicitly suggests the movement of the Earth.
In “Plants, Flowers, Grasses,” flora—continually producing oxygen with water, sunlight, and photosynthesis—is depicted as “icons.” Plants were the origin of life on Earth, and contributed to this planet becoming a world of life with the oxygen they produce.
These works represent separate series, but to me as a photographer they are all inter-related.
